Request for Print Technology Recommendation

    Hi Everyone,

What print technology is best or recommended for printing on the external PET layer of a multilayer laminate film that includes a layer of aluminum foil?  Ink jet, thermal transfer, etc.?  FYI, the artwork is reverse printed on the external PET layer.  I'm interested in a print technology that is durable and permanent (not easily rubbed off) for printing variable data.  A thermal transfer printer with an all resin ink ribbon was used to print samples and unfortunately they exhibited intermittent partial removal of the printed data during handling.

Also, can anyone recommend a method for evaluating the durability of the printed variable information?  I'm only aware of the 'tape test' a.k.a. Evaluating Ink or Coating Adhesion to Flexible Packaging Materials Using Tape (ASTM F2252/F2252M-13) or the Abrasion Resistance of Printed Materials by the Sutherland Rub Tester (ASTM D5264-98).  The problem with the tape test is that the tape identified in the test method no longer exists and unfortunately my experience with the Sutherland Rub Tester is that film to film or film to paper may pass the rub test; however, after some handling there is intermittent loss of the printed data.

    Any/all feedback is greatly appreciated!
