  • 1.  Cartons that require Die-cutting

    Posted 01-15-2026 06:11 PM
Can someone in the carton and corrugated industry help give an insight into this?

For carton that requires die-cutting, what tolerance requirements apply?

Additionally, do we have defined criteria such as usage thresholds, time intervals, or performance indicators-that determine when a die must be refurbished or replaced?

Please assist provide a detailed response, including any applicable standards, historical practices or documented guidelines.

    Hi Bethel,

We give a bleed of around 3 mm to 4 mm; in some scenarios it is given up to 5 mm as well. The tolerances when the die board hits the sheet are considered to be anywhere between 2 pt and 4 pt mm.

Tooling generally lasts for a million impressions, but the moment you see a ragged pattern or creases not being formed properly or the sharp edges turning blunt, causing half cuts, you may need to change the tooling.
