    Hello All,

    I recently joined IOPP and it has been super beneficial! I am currently going through the process of becoming a CPP. I am currently working as a packaging engineer at a hygiene and health company. It has been 2.5 years and it has been a great experience and I am learning a lot.

    Recently I have been thinking of what the next steps are for my career, the logical step is to go into a managerial role in packaging. I am curious to hear if I am missing anything or if anyone has any recommendations on interesting or unique aspects of the packaging industry that I should explore!

    Also does anyone have any tips on how I can stay in touch with all the new innovations in the industry?

    Thank you!!

    Tareq, welcome to the world of packaging. Happy to hear that you are enjoying your endeavour so far. Speaking as a 47-year veteran of the industry I would say that the most important element to a career in packaging is to keep your curiosity levels high at all times. When you are constantly seeking answers to questions about new technologies, new developments, and trends you are more likely to learn the valuable things that employers seek for further advancement within their companies.

    To that end, I would say keep a close watch on the issue of packaging sustainability as it is the single most vital discussion of our times and holds the key to the future of consumer goods packaging. In this regard, I like to check in with what is going on in Europe as they are in my opinion further advanced in developing answers to many of the key problems being discussed. Here are a couple of links to daily news publications that I enjoy and find value in;

    With over 30 years of industry experience as a Subject Matter Expert in packaging and Quality Management Systems, now a Part-Time Professor and consultant, I offer the following advice:

    1. Master the Packaging Design and Development Process: Gain comprehensive knowledge in planning, design, process qualification, verification, and validation.

    2. Apply Across Sectors: This process is essential for foods, healthcare, and personal care industries.

    3. Learn Key Tools: Become proficient in design and process FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and QFD (Quality Function Deployment).

    4. Manage Outflows: Focus on producing detailed product specifications, effective supplier management, and a robust control plan.

    Enjoy the wonderful journey!

    Thank you Patrick! I am definitely in the process of mastering the packaging design and development process!

    Right now! I am working on a process to better streamline the data collection when working with third party vendors!
