Bulk Packaging for Protein Powder Products in Multiwall Paper Bags - 10kg & 20 kg Bulk Sizes

Hello - I wanted to reach to fellow Pkg. Engineers to find someone with experience with Large Bulk Powder Protein Ingredients, packaged in:

Multiwall 50 # Kraft Paper with inner 2.0 mil LDPE liner inside. Packed in 3 x 2 format on the Pallet Layer x 10- HI per Pallet = 50 Bags per pallet. Generally packed in both: 10 kg (11 lbs.) & 20 kg (44 lbs.) size bulk bags. Currently only using thin fiber board pad, believe is coated for moisture barrier. Rotate 3x2 format, every other layer.

Having issues with overhang on the pallet, as the auto-palletizer is Push-style, not Robotic, pick-up style. Any suggestions or experience to improve the pallet layout for transit? Planning to Trial different pallet patterns, add corr. pads between layers, or every couple of layers at this point. Not sure if our current Push style palletizer will even allow us to add corr. slip sheets or to change the pallet pattern at this time. Any suggestions or ideas would be helpful.

Also, are there Pkg. alternatives out there to replace our current Multiwall Paper Bags with the 2.0 mil LDPE liners? Looking for alternate ideas, pkg. materials and suppliers that could suggest any alternate materials for Trials.

Thanks for your help. My signature is attached below if you'd like to chat as well.

    Hello Kevin,

Regarding your search for packaging alternatives to replace Multiwall Paper Bags with LDPE liners for bulk protein ingredients, you might consider evaluating a PET / Al Foil / PP laminate structure.

Based on my recent research into structural integrity for bulk shipments, this laminate offers several distinct advantages over traditional fiber-based systems for 10kg and 20kg applications:

    • Enhanced Barrier Performance: While a 2.0 mil LDPE liner provides basic moisture protection, the inclusion of Aluminum Foil as a middle layer creates a near-zero MVTR (Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate) and OTR (Oxygen Transmission Rate). This is critical for preventing protein oxidation and clumping during extended transit cycles.

    • Structural Integrity & Overhang Mitigation: Unlike multiwall paper, which can lose rigidity under high humidity or compression, a PET/PP laminate provides higher tensile strength. This can help the bags maintain a more "rectangular" profile after filling, potentially reducing the "rounding" effect that often leads to pallet overhang issues with push-style palletizers.

    • Puncture Resistance: The outer PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) layer provides excellent scuff resistance and puncture strength compared to Kraft paper, while the PP (Polypropylene) inner layer ensures high-strength heat seals capable of withstanding the internal hydraulic pressures of a 20kg bulk load.

    • Slip Control: Since you are having pallet layout issues, you can specify high-coefficient of friction (COF) coatings on the outer PET layer to prevent bag migration and "creep" during transit, which might reduce the need for additional corrugated slip sheets between every layer.

If you are open to it, I would be happy to share data on how these laminates perform under standard ISTA distribution profiles.
