  • 1.  Bar codes on multipacks

    Posted 11-03-2022 10:23 AM

Does anyone have experience relative to how different industries (durable goods), specifically retail, grocery handle bar code assignment (parent/child relationships), unit of measure, etc. for multipacks?  For example, a 6 pack multipack of a bottled product and each bottle has a UPC printed on it that represents that multipack as the saleable unit at the cash register.  The multipack can't be broken apart and sold individually.  The consumer has to know they only need to scan one bar code and not scan all 6 UPC's.  I am trying to understand if the way we have approached bar code labeling and unit of measures forever still makes sense.

    Mike,

Usually, when packed together there is a separate bar code or new bar code on the packaging of the multipack.

    Mike,

We treat the bar code on the single unit as DIFFERENT than the bar code for the multipack. Our usual issue is being sure that our multipack package design helps hide those single unit barcodes. Now, this is in food, where we sell through club knowing that some club customers ARE buying multipacks for resale in a small business that they own or operate.

We also have a standard way we call out what is contained in the multipack on the multipack package. For instance, that format on a 4-pack of Chili Beans reads "NET WT. 4-16.0 OZ (454g) CANS" on the first line, and "TOTAL NET WT. 4 LB (64 OZ) 1.82 kg" on the second line. I hope that helps in some way.

    Thanks,

    Robby
