Packaging Specification Management

Does anyone have any recommendations for managing packaging specifications? Tools, software, etc.

Is the SAP Packaging Workbench worthwhile?

I'm looking to get away from managing specs via paper/spreadsheets. We have SAP but I'm not sure it will be the right solution.

    Thanks!

    Hi Amanda,
You should look into Specright.  They have a very powerful system designed specifically for packaging related document creation and management. www.specright.com.

    Hi Amanda,

I helped develop a cloud based system when I was at JCI with a company called Surgere called Uspec.  Its pretty user friendly and you can access from anywhere.

If you have any questions let me know.

    Hi Amanda,

Perrigo is using Esko's WebCenter solution for label & packaging artwork management, and it can also be configured to do packaging specifications as well.  Here's an overview of how that could potentially look: WebCenter QuickStart for Packaging Specs .  I'd recommend that you connect with April Hitchcock and Tyler Katt down at the Allegan campus, as they manage WebCenter there at Perrigo and could help you explore further, or contact me directly as well.  Have a great day!

I really like what I've seen of Specright.  I'm sick of pdf's and spreadsheets.

I like this video of a presentation they gave at Pack Expo last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7cCZSnCiss

The best system I have used is the Microsoft SharePoint software.  You can set up and customize your libraries and sub-libraries to capture and retrieve quickly.  You can control and give permission to anyone in your company to access so they are not always coming to you asking to send specs and documents.  It is real easy to use and with 3 or 4 clicks can have any document at your fingertips.  My plants were super happy with access to my Packaging library especially when SQF and other auditors showed up.  They, within a few minutes, had all documents requested.  Auditors were deeply impressed as well at the ease they produced those documents.
Good luck and hope you find the system that works for you.  Let me know if I can be of further help.

As many others have pointed out, SpecRight is great tool and they continue to grow it's capabilities from a Quality Systems perspective.  Esko solution is also a one to look at because many packaging suppliers use their CAD solution (Artios), prepess solution.  If you use CAPE it can easily integrate with that as that it part of their product portfolio also.
